What is the best voice chat program to use while playing an mmorpg? It’s a good question really, there are quite a few out there on the market it really depends if you are willing to pay for the server yourself or want a free one. For example you are the GM of your guild and a voice chat program would benefit your guild, now comes the tough discusion as to whether you want to pay out for the server or would you rather go down the free server route. A lot of guilds that I know in World of Warcraft and Guild Wars tend to lean towards Ventrilo or most commonly known as Vent more than any other program. However you will have to pay for the server and I must say I am not particularly a fan of it. I have used TeamSpeak before, another voice chat program you would need to pay for the server, but I found it quite nice to use and it didn’t seem to use too much bandwidth up at the same time (which is good news).
However why pay when you can get a perfectly decent voice chat program that works just as well as the ones you do pay for! One that I have found that I like and have used before is called Murmur/Mumble, Murmur is the server program and Mumble is the client for it. What impresses me about Mumble is the good audio quality that it has for being free software, I definately take my hat off to the creators.
For those that are new to using voice chat programs while gaming and a little unsure why they are widely used, I shall explain how it could benefit you. For example your guild is about to start doing end game content (raiding) if you are playing WoW, it’s not easy or convenient at the time to type out things that you may want to tell your team mates or watch out for, like a mob coming from behind or whatever. This is where a voice chat program comes in really handy, you could quickly tell your team mates without having to stop what you are doing and type out what you want to say to them. Definately a bad idea if your a healer and have to stop healing just to type out “Watch out pat behind” it could lead to a wipe which lets be honest nobody likes!
So to end this post I seriously recommend getting your hands on Murmur/Mumble and giving it a try, its FREE so you might as well!
